I Another week, another learning opportunity! This week, I embarked on another Italian adventure with Italian Pod 101. During my search online for some resources to learn Italian, I stumbled upon a video on Youtube called "Learn Italian in 30 Minutes - All the Basics You Need" and WOW, was it a great video! The instructor is very clear, straight forward, and educated on the language which made for an easy lesson. The video was roughly thirty minutes in length and went over basic phrases as well as counting. During the video, I learnt that in Italian, there is a formal and informal way to say phrases. For example, when saying hello, the formal way to say it is Bongiorno and the informal way to say it is Ciao. The only thing the video did not go over was in what circumstances are the formal/informal phrases used, it is something I would like to dig into more so I know when it's an appropriate time to use which type of phrase. I spent a few hours going over the video, pausing after every word/phrase and repeating it until I was able to say it properly. While I was listening and repeating, I was also jotting down notes so I had a visual of what the words looked like. After I felt confident that I knew all the words/phrases and had a good understanding of what they meant, I started planning out my video I was going to make with Windows Movie Editor . After recording the video, I was able to place it into Windows Movie Editor to start editing the video. This was the first time I had ever used the app, so once the video was in there I was a little lost on how to start editing it. I decided the best approach to this was to search up a video to show me step by step instructions on how to begin editing my video. I found a video on Youtube by Windows called "Video Editing in Microsoft Photos | Titles and Texts", which showed me step by step instruction on how to use the program. The video was simple and easy to follow, I got the hang of the app in no time. I started editing my video by splitting the video up into different sections. My video was just over three minutes long, but it took a longggggg time to split everything up the way I wanted to. By doing this, I was able to add text to certain sections of video and adjust the timing of when the text would show up. I decided it would be best to place the English meaning for the words I was saying underneath me, so that the viewer was able to follow along with what I was saying. After taking quite a while to edit, I watched the video to ensure I was happy with it. After watching it, it felt like something was missing, but I just couldn't place my finger on it. Of course! The video was missing some catchy background music! I found a tune that was labeled Happy Beat. After listening to it, I knew that's what I needed to tie the whole video together. At last!! The video was completed. I was very happy with the outcome as this was the first video I have ever edited. The final product could definitely be more smooth with the transitions, but hey, I wasn't expecting picture perfect my first go around. I highly recommend using Windows Movie Editor, especially if you are new to the game. It's extremely user friendly and there are tons of videos online in case you get stuck on the app. I am looking forward to continuing my Italian journey and using Windows Movie Editor to help me capture my progress! Enjoy my video! Ciao for now!

Today I decided to listen to the podcast Let's Learn Italian on Spotify. They are quick podcasts that range from 1-10 minutes each. I started off today with the Italian greetings podcast, which went over how to say simple/common greetings in Italian. Here is what I have learnt so far...
Yes - si No - no Good Day - Buongiorno Good Evening - Buonasera Goodnight - Buona Notte Goodbye - Arrivederci A lot of these phrases were familiar to me from hearing them at some family gatherings, but I was unaware of how to fully pronounce them. I spent a good amount of time on each word to ensure I was saying it properly. I found the hardest part was rolling my tongue as I haven't practiced doing that. The next episode I am going to be listening to is how to say phrases such as 'you're welcome'. Before I begin that episode tomorrow, I am going to put some time aside to practice my tongue rolling to ensure I am doing it properly! Looking forward to continuing this journey! For my learning project this semester I have chosen to learn the beautiful language of Italian. I am choosing to do this for my project because it has always been an interest of mine. I have been wanting to learn for so long and haven't put the time or effort into learning, so I thought, why not learn now? Although I don't believe I will learn to speak fluent Italian in the next few weeks (I'm not that good!), I do think I can learn some common phrases and key words that will help me become more familiar with the language.
Where did my love for Italian come from you ask? Fun fact, I am half Italian and some of my family members speak fluent Italian. My Aunt is straight from Italy and her and my Uncle opened up an Italian restaurant in Vancouver, that has been rated one of the best in the whole city! It is called Robba Da Matti, in case you are interested in checking it out (highly recommend). Starting this year, they plan on living in Italy half the year and in Vancouver the other half. My hope is to go visit them for some time during their stay so I can get a first hand experience of the country! I am also extremely passionate about learning this language because my husband and I are planning on honeymooning in Croatia/Italy and it would be handy to know the language, at least common phrases, before heading overseas. I got married back in September, but due to the pandemic, we were never able to make any solid plans on when we were going to go on our honeymoon. Although it is disappointing having to wait so long to go on our trip, it gives me an opportunity to finally learn some Italian! I plan on using a variety of internet tools to help me learn. I have found a few podcasts on spotify I will start listening to. I listen to podcasts while I am at work, so I will have ample time to listen along and indulge in the beautiful language! Some podcast channels I have found are Eataly, Linguaboost, and Vaporetto Italiano. Along with the podcasts, I will also be watching Youtube videos and searching websites for tips and tricks. I look forward to sharing this journey with you!! |
